More Perspective: Jim Umile
Fellow Saint Mike's alum and frequent Jackson Hole vacationer Jim Umile chimes in on his favorites ..
We are heading to UT, Alta/Snowbird for Feb 16 and 17, then on to JH for 18-22, then back to UT for 23 and 24. Skiing is like riding a bike when you have the experience you have.
I read the heads up you guys got for best places to go on the hill, as well as in town. The START bus is always good, but nothing beats hanging in the village, hitting up the Mangy Moose après (you'll find yourself there until at least 6), then grubbing at the house/condo and sleeping to get ready for the next day. Oh did I say that? That is the age speaking now! The village does not have as many options as you might expect ... definitely check the Snake River for good $$ food, one bar he left out that is a good local hangout, somewhat of a dump but great is the StageCoach, they may have changed the name? Jackson has a local (semi-pro/men's league) hockey team that is a great take for a night too, they sell beer and the crowd is fun. Keep an eye on mangymoose.net for good concerts, always good stuff there, as well as the Snow King Theatre.
As far as the mountain offerings ... they are endless, during a non-storm cycle, you will find yourself lapping it up on Thunder and Sublette quads and the Rendezvous Bowl double, hitting the trails called ... from facing left to right Bivouac Woods, Rendezvous Bowl, Alta Chutes 1, 2 and 3, Tensleep Bowl into Expert Chutes into Paintbrush/Toilet Bowl (a personal favorite) and the always fun Tower Three chute. The Lower Faces ... Hobacks, Colter Ridge, all the way over to Moran Woods and Saratoga Bowl are soooo much fun when there is lower mountain snow. Sounds silly, but when there is no snow, hitting the corduruy at Après Vous quad is a good time.
For in bounds hiking, be sure to hit up the Headwall, definitely Casper Bowl and also the Crags. The hike is easy and the reward very worth it. When it is dumping, enjoy the whole mountain, get to the quad early for first tracks:) Suggestion for this day ... take the Gondola up, stay high left right under the Gondi into Casper Traverse, hit Woolsey Woods down to Amphitheatre Traverse, down to Thunder Chair making your way to Sublette and hit up the Hobacks!
The mountain is endless, and regardless of the conditions, always fun! It is Cowboy Country after all.
Enjoy, JIM
